Reading the Bible is one of the most important habits a Christian can develop. And yet, for many believers, Bible reading can feel difficult to maintain. Life gets busy, distractions are everywhere, and sometimes it’s just hard to know where to start.
But the Bible is not just an ancient book of history or moral teaching. It is God’s Word – alive, active and deeply relevant for our lives today.
Here are 7 powerful reasons why Christians should read the Bible…

1. The Bible tells us to
The first and most obvious reason is simply that, the Bible tells us to!
In the Old Testament, God commanded his people to read his Word every day.
For example, Joshua 1:8 says:
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (NIV)
Similarly, Psalm 1 describes the blessed person as someone who delights in God’s Word and reads it daily:
“Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” – Psalm 1:1–2 (NIV)
God’s people were always meant to immerse themselves in his Word. It was not intended to be something that was occasionally heard at religious gatherings and then forgotten. It was meant to be an integral part of everyday life.
In the New Testament, Jesus emphasised the same principle. When he was tempted in the wilderness, he responded by quoting Scripture and declaring:
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” – Matthew 4:4 (NIV)
In other words, just as our physical bodies require food each day, so our spiritual lives require the daily nourishment of God’s Word.
We also see examples of believers being commended for their devotion to Scripture. In Acts 17:11, the Bereans are praised because:
“They received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” (NIV)
Colossians 3:16 says:
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly.” (NIV)
Again and again, Scripture shows us that God’s people are people who read his Word.
And we also see the opposite throughout the Bible. When God’s people neglect his Word, they drift spiritually, start conforming to the standards of the world around them, and end up falling into sin.
2. You are what you “eat”
There’s a popular saying that, “You are what you eat”.
A modern twist on that saying is, “You are what you consume”.
In other words, the things we consistently take into our minds shape how we think, what we believe and how we live.
Romans 12:2 explains this clearly:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (NIV)
Our minds are constantly being shaped by the influences around us. Social media, news, television and the opinions of those we spend most time with all shape how we see the world.
If those worldly influences are the primary “diet” we feed our minds with, those things will inevitably have the biggest influence on our thinking and behaviour.
But when we consistently fill our minds with Scripture, something different happens. Our thinking begins to change. Our values become more aligned with God’s values. Our priorities become more aligned with God’s priorities. In short: we become less worldly and more godly.
Psalm 119:11 says:
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (NIV)
In other words, the more we fill our minds with God’s Word, the more it begins to shape our hearts and guide our choices.
If you want to grow in Christlikeness, reading the Bible needs to become part of your daily spiritual diet.
3. It helps you grow closer to God
In any good human relationship, the more time you spend with that person, the more you get to know their character, their values and their heart, and the closer your relationship becomes.
The same is true in our relationship with God.
The Bible reveals who God is – his character, his promises, his purposes and his love for his people. As we read Scripture, we begin to understand him more clearly and get to know him better.
The Bible is not simply a collection of religious ideas. It is the primary way that God reveals himself to us.
Hebrews 4:12 says:
“The word of God is alive and active.” (NIV)
And 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us that:
“All Scripture is God-breathed.” (NIV)
When we read the Bible, we are not just reading words on a page. We are meeting with God.
While prayer is the main way we speak to God, the Bible is the main way God speaks to us.
Over time, as we regularly read Scripture, we begin to recognise God’s voice more clearly, understand his character more deeply and grow closer to him.
4. It transforms your character
One of the most powerful effects of reading the Bible consistently is that it gradually changes us.
Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word of God as:
“Sharper than any double-edged sword… it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (NIV)
God’s Word exposes what is really going on inside us. It reveals sin, challenges our attitudes and calls us to live differently.
James 1:23–25 compares God’s Word to a mirror that shows us what we are really like.
As we read Scripture, we begin to see areas of our lives that need to change. We may become aware of pride, selfishness, impatience or anxiety that we had previously ignored.
But the Bible does not only expose sin – it also shapes our character in a positive way.
Through Scripture, God teaches us how to live with humility, patience, kindness, forgiveness and love.
Galatians 5:22–23 describes the fruit of the Spirit as:
“love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (NIV)
As we spend time in God’s Word, the Holy Spirit uses it to gradually produce these qualities in our lives.
Scripture doesn’t just inform us – it transforms us.
5. It gives us wisdom and guidance
Life is full of decisions. Some are small and mundane. Others are significant and life-changing.
God has not left us to navigate life without guidance. One of the primary ways he guides his people is through his Word.
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (NIV)
Just as a lamp illuminates a dark path, Scripture helps us see clearly how to live.
Psalm 19:7 says:
“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.” (NIV)
Even those who feel inexperienced or uncertain can gain wisdom through God’s Word.
Paul explains the purpose of Scripture in 2 Timothy 3:16–17:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (NIV)
Through the Bible, God teaches us truth, corrects our mistakes and trains us to live in ways that honour him.
6. It strengthens your faith
Another important reason to read the Bible is that it strengthens our faith.
Faith grows when we are reminded of who God is and what he has done.
Romans 10:17 says:
“Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” (NIV)
When we read Scripture, we see God’s faithfulness throughout history. We see his promises fulfilled, his power displayed and his mercy extended to his people.
Reading these accounts reminds us that the same God who worked in the past is still working today.
During difficult seasons of life, Scripture reminds us of God’s promises and helps our faith stay strong.
7. It helps you resist temptation and sin
The Bible also equips us to resist temptation and stand firm against sin.
When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, he responded by quoting Scripture (Matthew 4:1–11). Each time the enemy tempted him, Jesus answered with the words, “It is written.”
God’s Word provides truth that helps us recognise the lies of the enemy and resist temptation.
Psalm 119:11 says:
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (NIV)
When Scripture fills our minds, it strengthens our ability to choose what is right and resist what is wrong.
Final Thoughts
The Bible is far more than a religious book to be read occasionally. It is God’s living Word, given to guide, strengthen and transform his people daily.
Through Scripture we learn who God is, understand his purposes and discover how to live in ways that honour him.
Reading the Bible consistently helps us grow closer to God, develop wisdom, resist temptation and become more like Christ.
The goal is not simply to complete a reading plan or accumulate knowledge. The goal is to know God more deeply and allow his Word to shape our lives.
